Names of Satan and who he is!
The Bible calls Satan by many different names. These names give us a clear picture of who Satan is and what it is that he does. Few realize that there are more names for Satan in the Bible than for anyone else, except Jesus Christ.
Accuser: "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night" (Revelation 12:10).
Adversary: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" (1 Peter 5:8).
Angel of light: "And no marvel! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14)
Anointed covering cherub: "Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire" (Ezekiel 28:14).
Beelzebub: "But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils" (Matthew 12:24).
Belial: "And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel" (2 Corinthians 6:15).
Devil: "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9).
Dragon: "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9).
Enemy: "The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels" (Matthew 13:39).
Father of lies: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44).
King of Tyre: "Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty" (Ezekiel 28:12).
Leviathan: "In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea" (Isaiah 27:1).
Liar: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44).
Lucifer: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High" (Isaiah 14:12-14). Some foolishly believe that "Lucifer" is a title for Jesus Christ. This is absolutely beyond ludicrous and far surpasses the boundaries of being blasphemous. "Lucifer" is the name of Satan. They are one in the same. He is an angel, originally created by God, who served the Lord in righteousness for an unknown period of time. But then "Lucifer" rebelled and led a revolution against God. He said "I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High" (Isaiah 14: 13-14). "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9). Lucifer then became Satan.
God oftentimes changed a person's name in the Bible and when He changed an old name into a new name, it was to establish a "new identity." God changed Abram’s name which meant "high father" to Abraham which meant "father of multitude" (Genesis 17:5) and his wife’s name God changed from Sarai which meant " princess," to Sarah which meant "mother of nations" (Genesis 17:15). And of course we know from history that the descendants of Abraham and Sarah did indeed form "many nations." God changed Jacob’s name which meant "supplanter" to Israel which meant "having power with God" (Genesis 32:28). It was for this same reason (establishing a new identity) that "Lucifers" name was changed to "Satan", because after his fall he obviously had established a "new identity." No longer was he the beautiful angel who had served the Lord in righteousness, he was now a fallen angel at war with God. He was no longer fit or deserving of the name Lucifer and the changing of his name was representative of his new nature.
Approximately one-third of the angels joined "Lucifer" in his rebellion (Revelation 12:4). Those same individuals mentioned earlier who believe that "Lucifer" is a title for Jesus will also argue that the name "Lucifer" is not used in the New Testament when referring to Satan and of course it would not be. "Lucifer" was Satan's original name when he served the Lord in righteousness, but after he rebelled against God he was afterward referred to as Satan. The 28th chapter of Ezekiel speaks of the king of Tyrus who is here symbolic of Satan. Even though the king of Tyrus is used as a symbol it is obvious that the statements made (specifically verses 11 - 19) could not possibly refer to any mere mortal. For example when verse 14 speaks of the "anointed Cherub" it is not speaking of an earthly king, because the word "cherub" is only used in references to angels. In fact, these scriptures refer to Satan (Lucifer). and when used in combination with Isaiah chapter 14 they give us tremendous insight into the ruler of darkness, (Satan).
